Alex Schuller, a long-time international journalist, was stationed at the Ukrainian-Hungarian border in Záhony to report on the never-ending stream of refugees coming from the Ukraine to find peace and shelter. When winter was approaching and it was clear, the war wouldn’t end so soon, he came up with the idea for this project and the „Freedom Train“ event-series was born. Some months later the Freedom Train project has many helpers and launches different art projects, concerts and media events to raise money for the cause.

With the „Freedom Train“ we want to help refugees in cooperation with the municipality of Záhony (HU) and CESVI, an internationally recognised and award-winning NGO. Especially all those people who are waiting in Záhony, a border town to Ukraine, for registration to enter the EU after fleeing. The municipality of Záhony runs a tent at the railway station, where refugees are provided with the most basic necessities by the local population and can recover from the stresses and strains of their flight. Furthermore, the people can get legal advice from UNHCR experts and information on how to proceed with their flight.
That is a good thing, but unfortunately this tent is not winter-proof! We came up with a number of possible and useful aid measures. With the Freedom Train, we would like to embark on a journey whose goal is to make these ideas a reality.
